Air Liquide was awarded a contract by RasGas to build a 38 x 106 m3 annual capacity helium plant in Qatar that when completed in 2013 will account for 25% of the world’s He production. (C&EN Magazine, May 10, 2010, p. 20).

ChroMatters wiki is down temporarily
Sunday, February 21st, 2010The ChroMatters wiki is down temporarily while the server is brought back online. Seems having a tie-wrap come loose and jam the CPU fan isn’t good for reliability… It should be back in a few days.
Update: the wiki is up but there’s no content. It’s a permissions problem. Stay tuned.
Helium prices to decrease?
Wednesday, February 10th, 2010C&E News, in the Feb 1, 2010 issue, page 24, reports that the National Research Council has recommended to Congress that the Federal Helium Reserve needs to be better managed or the U.S. risks becoming a helium importer by 2020 – 2025. The NRC also called for assistance for scientists to better conserve helium as well as in purchasing the element.
At US$ 400 – 500 per A-size (50-L) tank, GC labs will benefit from any price decrease. But, hydrogen will remain the best alternative and may in the near future become the preferred GC carrier gas. This of course will require users to overcome any fears they have about using hydrogen, which is only a matter of education and deployment of suitable H2 generators plus hydrogen detectors if required.

The ChroMatters wiki will be open to public membership at first, until and when it becomes unmanageable.
